Sand-Anthracite Filter Overview

A sand-anthracite filter, also known as a dual media or multi-media filter, is designed for the removal of turbidity and suspended solids as small as 10-20 microns. These filters are highly efficient in particle removal even at high filtration rates. Inside the filter, a layered bed of filter media ensures optimal performance and longer run times before a backwash is necessary.

Structure and Mechanism

Graded Filter Media

The filter media bed is graded from bottom to top as follows:

Gravels and Pebbles: Provide support to the media layers.
Sand: Removes suspended particles.
Anthracite: Removes odor, color, and other impurities.

This grading allows the sand-anthracite filter to operate efficiently for extended periods before needing a backwash.

Components

A sand-anthracite filter consists of two main parts:

Composite Pressure Vessel with Multiport Valve
Graded Beds of Sand and Anthracite

Internally, the filter features an inlet distributor and a bottom collecting system. Externally, it is equipped with frontal pipework and isolation valves. Periodically, the filter will undergo a backwash, reversing the water flow to clean the media.
