Descaling Services: Boiler Through Circulation Method

Procedure for Descaling a Boiler via Circulation Method:

  1. Prepare the Boiler:

    • Take the boiler offline and ensure the pressure is dropped to zero.
  2. Close Main Steam Valve:

    • Shut the main steam valve tightly to prevent chemicals from entering the steam system.
  3. Safety Valve and Hose Setup:

    • Remove the safety valve and connect a 1/2″ hose from this outlet back to the external mixing tank for chemical addition.
  4. Vent Arrangement:

    • Create a vent at the top of the boiler to release gases while preventing circulating water from escaping through the vent.
  5. Isolate Feed Water Pump:

    • Isolate the boiler feed water pump and pressure control system, including sight glass valves, before adding chemicals.
  6. Connect Bottom Blow Down Valve:

    • Use the bottom blow down valve to connect to the discharge of the recirculating pump for chemical entry.
  7. Determine Chemical Quantity:

    • Assess the flooded water content of the boiler to calculate the required amount of cleaning chemical.
  8. Prepare Mixing Tank:

    • Fill the mixing tank halfway to avoid overflow during the chemical addition process. Add the inhibited chemical (INDO 2200) to the tank.
  9. Start Recirculating Pump:

    • Initiate the recirculating pump to introduce the chemical-water mix into the boiler from the bottom.
  10. Chemical Addition:

    • Continue adding chemical to the mixing tank until the boiler is full and the water begins to return to the tank.
  11. Increase Temperature (Optional):

    • If possible, start the boiler briefly to raise the circulating water temperature to 100-120°C, enhancing chemical reaction time.
  12. Continuous Circulation:

    • Maintain circulation for a minimum of 8 hours.
  13. Neutralizing Compound:

    • After circulation, add a neutralizing compound (e.g., caustic) to the mixing tank to adjust pH to 7.

CAUTION: Use gloves and safety eyewear when handling chemicals to avoid splashes.

  1. Drain the System:

    • Stop the pump and drain the chemical-water mix from the boiler once cleaning is complete.
  2. Flush the Boiler:

    • Open the manhole and flush all areas with a pressure hose.
  3. Flush the Mud Drum:

    • Ensure the mud drum is also thoroughly flushed with a pressure hose.
  4. Replace Gaskets and Refill:

    • Replace all hand hole gaskets with new ones and refill the boiler with soft water, opening the feed water pump valves.
  5. Chemical Treatment:

    • Ensure the fresh water is treated with chemicals.
  6. Check for Leaks:

    • Start the boiler and inspect for any leaks.
  7. Normal Startup Procedure:

    • Follow standard boiler startup procedures at low fire.
  8. Manual Blow Down:

    • Perform manual blow down more frequently over the next 3 days to remove any residual scale.
