How a Water Softener Works

A water softener removes hard minerals like calcium and magnesium from untreated water, replacing them with sodium (salt). The process begins when untreated water enters the brine tank, where it becomes saturated with sodium. This sodium-saturated water then flows into the resin tank, filled with millions of tiny polystyrene beads that attract the sodium molecules. The excess saltwater is purged from the system.

As unsoftened water enters the resin tank, the hard minerals trade places with sodium ions, attaching themselves to the beads until there are no more sodium molecules available. When this happens, the softener regenerates by scrubbing the hard minerals off the beads and draining the wastewater, starting the cycle anew.

Resin Cleaning Compound

We recommend using our traditional cleaning reagent, INDO 6202 Resin Cleaning Compound. The choice of cleaning product should be based on the material of the softener’s shell and internal distributors.

Five Steps for Keeping Your Softener Healthy

  • Use Pure Salt with Iron Remover: Avoid standard rock salt, which contains contaminants that can cause sediment buildup in the brine tank, clogging injectors and control valves.
  • Refill the Salt Tank: Only add salt when most of the previous salt is used up. Refill to no more than two-thirds full.
  • Annual Cleaning: Use Iron-Out once a year to clean the resin bed and control valve parts.
  • Clean the Brine Tank Yearly: Even pure salt can contain contaminants that require regular cleaning.
  • Proper Drain Line Placement: Ensure the softener’s drain line is positioned above the floor drain grate to prevent sewage siphoning into the softener.
